Funeral Masses are celebrated as Parish Community
Masses at 10.00 a.m. on weekdays and 12.15 p.m. on
Sundays. A visiting priest is welcome to celebrate
a Funeral Mass at a time other than these times. On
a day where there are two funerals a second Funeral
Mass will be celebrated at a time arranged by the
family of the deceased. If the Funeral Mass is followed
by burial in a cemetery outside the city the undertaker
may have to make arrangements with the priest of that
parish to assist at the graveside.
The priest saying the Funeral Mass will call with
the family of the deceased to discuss the Funeral
Liturgy and will provide suitable readings and prayers
for the Mass. Suitable poetry or prayers of reflection
can be read after communion but it is not the practice
in our parish to invite friends or family members
to reminisce about the deceased during the Funeral
Mass. This can be done in the home of the deceased
or at the graveside.
Music for the Funeral Mass is usually arranged by
the family or by the undertaker and is always suited
to the dignity of the Funeral Liturgy. If at all possible
a priest will call to the wake each evening to lead
the family in prayers for the deceased. It is no longer
our practice to hear Confessions in the wake house.
